Caesars<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> is ending its last two known US college sports betting partnerships amid heightened concern about state and federal regulatory action.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A spokesperson for <\/span><\/span><\/span>PlayFly Sports<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, the media rightsholder for athletic departments at <\/span><\/span><\/span>LSU <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>and <\/span><\/span><\/span>Michigan State<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, confirmed both schools are finalizing the termination of their agreements to market <\/span><\/span><\/span>Caesars Sportsbook.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span> Both had multiple years left on their deals.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Caesars, PointsBet out on college sports betting deals<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Four schools have cut ties with betting sponsors since <\/span><\/span><\/span>US Sen.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>Richard Blumenthal <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>began calling on them to do so. In late <\/span><\/span><\/span>March,<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> Blumenthal called on <\/span><\/span><\/span>66 <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>schools to disclose the details of all payments from betting companies, highlighting problem gambling risks for their students, the majority of whom are under most states’ legal betting age of <\/span><\/span><\/span>21<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>. The <\/span><\/span><\/span>American Gaming Association<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> banned its members<\/a> from promoting betting on campus as well.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

PointsBet<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> has since ended its partnerships with the <\/span><\/span><\/span>University of Colorado<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and the <\/span><\/span><\/span>University of Maryland<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, though those decisions were unrelated to the AGA. Like Caesars, PointsBet is not an AGA member.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What changed in three years?<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Once sold as an extra revenue stream to keep athletic departments afloat during the pandemic, these multimillion-dollar partnerships likely were not returning enough value for sportsbooks to justify the backlash against them.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In a recent earnings call<\/a>, Caesars <\/span><\/span><\/span>CEO Tom Reeg<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> said winding down team partnerships is part of the company’s strategy to generate a profit from sports betting. He has been vocal about past assumptions regarding their value not quite playing out as hoped.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Under its college pacts, Caesars retained exclusive sports betting advertising rights at LSU and MSU games.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Local push to ditch Caesars<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

LSU was criticized after a <\/span><\/span><\/span>New York Times<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span> article<\/a> revealed it erroneously sent emails to students with Caesars signup offers, encouraging them to use a school-specific <\/span><\/span><\/span>promo code<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Drawing from the same article, a group of Michigan State professors launched a petition in <\/span><\/span><\/span>April<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> to end their school’s betting partnership. The author previously told <\/span><\/span><\/span>LSR<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span> school officials had indicated they were exploring a breakup with Caesars before the petition.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“MSU has declined to comment for any of the news stories about university partnerships with sports betting companies. Declining to comment is a good idea, because our position is indefensible,” the petition reads.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Pols act on college sports betting deals<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span><\/span><\/span>New York Times<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span> article was cited throughout <\/span><\/span><\/span>Maryland<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>‘s 2023 lawmaking session, which saw the passage of a bill that requires schools to disclose all details of any arrangements with sports betting companies. It also prevents schools from being compensated for users who signup via a campus promo.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

While that was not an element of the University of Maryland’s deal, it had been a controversial and subsequently removed clause in the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Colorado<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> deal.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

New Jersey<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> is weighing adding more responsible gambling resources at public colleges, as well as an outright ban on partnerships between schools and sportsbooks.
