While higher gambling taxes are generating far less revenue than the government projected, the regulated industry has opened a new legal front against <strong>Meta<\/strong>, accusing the technology giant of enabling the widespread promotion of illegal gambling operators. Together, the two developments have intensified the debate over the balance between taxation, regulation, and the competitiveness of the licensed market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/landing\/multigame-link\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"700\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/08\/multigame-diamod-III-700-eng.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9622\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/08\/multigame-diamod-III-700-eng.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/08\/multigame-diamod-III-700-eng-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/08\/multigame-diamod-III-700-eng-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Dutch government increased the gambling tax on <strong>gross gaming revenue (GGR)<\/strong> from <strong>30.5% to 34.2%<\/strong> on <strong>January 1, 2025<\/strong>, before raising it again to <strong>37.8%<\/strong> on <strong>January 1, 2026<\/strong>, creating one of the highest gambling tax rates in Europe. However, the fiscal outcome has fallen dramatically short of expectations. For <strong>2025<\/strong>, the <strong>Ministry of Finance<\/strong> projected an additional <strong>\u20ac108 million<\/strong> in tax revenue, yet the increase generated only <strong>\u20ac2 million<\/strong>. The report concludes that the heavier tax burden has reduced the profitability of licensed operators, placed additional pressure on <strong>Holland Casino<\/strong>, and accelerated consumer migration toward unlicensed gambling platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/dutch-gambling-tax-backfires-and-meta-faces-lawsuit-over-illegal-betting-ads3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/dutch-gambling-tax-backfires-and-meta-faces-lawsuit-over-illegal-betting-ads3.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/dutch-gambling-tax-backfires-and-meta-faces-lawsuit-over-illegal-betting-ads3-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/dutch-gambling-tax-backfires-and-meta-faces-lawsuit-over-illegal-betting-ads3-768x427.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Licensed Dutch Online Gambling Providers Association (VNLOK)<\/strong> has filed legal action against <strong>Meta Platforms<\/strong>, alleging that <strong>Facebook<\/strong> and <strong>Instagram<\/strong> have become major channels for illegal gambling advertising. According to VNLOK&#8217;s investigation, more than <strong>70,000 gambling-related advertisements<\/strong> appeared across Meta&#8217;s platforms during the final quarter of <strong>2025<\/strong>.
