Revenue estimates that each <strong>one-percentage-point increase<\/strong> in Betting Duty could generate around <strong>\u20ac55 million in additional annual revenue<\/strong>; a 0.5-point increase would raise \u20ac28 million, a two-point increase \u20ac110 million, and a three-point increase \u20ac165 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"510\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/09\/ireland-considers-raising-betting-tax-in-20272.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18774\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/09\/ireland-considers-raising-betting-tax-in-20272.png 800w, https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/09\/ireland-considers-raising-betting-tax-in-20272-300x191.png 300w, https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/09\/ireland-considers-raising-betting-tax-in-20272-768x490.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Sharon Byrne<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The current rate is <strong>2% for retail and remote bookmakers<\/strong>, while remote betting intermediaries pay <strong>25% on commissions<\/strong>. Revenue continues to collect the tax, although since February 2026 responsibility for issuing new licenses has moved to the <strong>Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI)<\/strong>. The <strong>Irish Bookmakers Association (IBA)<\/strong>, chaired by <strong>Sharon Byrne<\/strong>, opposes another increase. The organization says that since the tax doubled from 1% to 2% in <strong>2019<\/strong>, <strong>222 betting shops<\/strong> have closed and around <strong>1,000 jobs<\/strong> have disappeared, leaving approximately <strong>643 active outlets<\/strong>, compared with 1,385 in 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"435\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/09\/ireland-considers-raising-betting-tax-in-20273.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18775\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/09\/ireland-considers-raising-betting-tax-in-20273.png 635w, https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/09\/ireland-considers-raising-betting-tax-in-20273-300x206.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Jim O&#8217;Callaghan<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Businessman <strong>Anthony Kaminskas<\/strong>, founder of <strong>AK BETS<\/strong>, has also warned that a higher turnover-based tax could force operators to reduce products, worsen odds or pass the cost on to customers. GRAI, established under the <strong>Gambling Regulation Act 2024<\/strong>, is chaired by <strong>Paul Quinn<\/strong> and led by <strong>Anne Marie Caulfield<\/strong>.
