{"id":6603,"date":"2023-07-13T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-13T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/en\/europe\/no-evidence-to-support-a-link-between-sports-advertising-and-problem-gambling-lobby-on-uk-under-fire\/"},"modified":"2023-07-13T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-07-13T00:00:00","slug":"no-evidence-to-support-a-link-between-sports-advertising-and-problem-gambling-lobby-on-uk-under-fire","status":"publish","type":"europe","link":"https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/en\/europe\/no-evidence-to-support-a-link-between-sports-advertising-and-problem-gambling-lobby-on-uk-under-fire\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cNo evidence to support a link between sports advertising and problem gambling\u201d lobby on UK under fire."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:large\">The main lobby group for the UK betting industry has told MPs that there is no evidence to support a link between sports advertising and problem gambling.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:large\">Betting and Gaming Council chief executive <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:large\"><strong>Michael Dugher<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:large\"> <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:large\">told the Culture, Media and Sport Committee that he supported the Government&rsquo;s &ldquo;evidence-led&rdquo; approach to the recently-released gambling White Paper.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,serif\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/opinion\/the-ministers-come-and-go-but-the-reform-of-the-game-will-continue-with-the-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:large\">The ministers come and go, but the reform of the game will continue with the change.<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:large\">He said the industry welcomed the White Paper &ldquo;very, very strongly&rdquo;, not least for measures including enhanced spending checks and a new ombudsman. &ldquo;And the Government, having reviewed all of the evidence, found no evidence.&rdquo;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Arial,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:large\">Asked by committee member <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:large\"><strong>John Nicolson<\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:large\"> if there should be a complete ban on advertising in sports grounds that made gambling attractive to children, Mr Dugher replied: &ldquo;If the objective is to reduce harm, to tackle problem gambling, it would be a sensible thing to do if there was any evidence of a link between advertising and sports sponsorship and problem gambling.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/assets\/international\/no-evidence-to-support-a-link-between-sports-advertising-and-problem-gambling-lobby-on-uk-under-fire2.jpg\" style=\"width:100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Arial,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:large\"><strong>Wes Himes,<\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:large\"> director of standards and innovation at the Betting and Gaming Council, replied: &ldquo;Yes, and that&rsquo;s why we work tirelessly to try to bring in more measures. We&rsquo;ve developed 11 codes over the last three years, over 80 substantial measures which sit on top of regulation and legislation to create that safer gambling culture.&rdquo;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:large\">Mr Himes also claimed a reduction in problem gambling rates over the last seven years, telling the committee: <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family:Arial,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:large\"><em>&ldquo;They have nearly halved since 2017 to 0.3% today &ndash; one of the lowest problem gambling rates internationally.
