The Chamber of Deputies had approved the text under an urgent procedure in two consecutive readings on <strong>July 23, 2026<\/strong>, requiring it to return to the Senate because of the amendments adopted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"728\" height=\"477\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/09\/dominican-senate-approves-new-gambling-law2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18739\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/09\/dominican-senate-approves-new-gambling-law2.png 728w, https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/09\/dominican-senate-approves-new-gambling-law2-300x197.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Claudia Catherin \u00c1lvarez Troncoso<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bill contains <strong>195 articles<\/strong> and creates the <strong>General Directorate of Gambling (DGJA)<\/strong> as an autonomous and decentralized body with administrative, financial and technical independence to issue licenses, supervise operators, control advertising, sanction illegal activity and oversee both land-based and digital gambling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposal establishes <strong>10-year licenses<\/strong> for casinos, which would be restricted to <strong>hotels rated four stars or higher<\/strong>, and sets minimum distances of up to <strong>500 meters<\/strong> from schools, universities, churches, hospitals and other protected areas. Sports betting shops and horse-racing agencies would also require 500 meters of separation, while lottery shops would have to maintain <strong>200 meters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"737\" height=\"472\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/09\/dominican-senate-approves-new-gambling-law3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18740\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.5623342175066313;width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/09\/dominican-senate-approves-new-gambling-law3.png 737w, https:\/\/www.mundovideo.com.co\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/09\/dominican-senate-approves-new-gambling-law3-300x192.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 737px) 100vw, 737px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A transitional provision would suspend new licenses for much of the sector for <strong>10 years<\/strong> once the official registry is published, although casinos linked to hotels and tourist areas would be exempt. The plenary approved the bill, although <strong>no verifiable nominal breakdown of votes has yet been published<\/strong>.
