Los Angeles cardrooms this week received the approval to resume outdoor operations, with strict safety protocols to stem the spread of the coronavirus, after Gov. Gavin Newsom lifted regional stay-at-home orders on Monday, Jan. 25.
Still, some uncertainty around the reopening remains. For one, the county has yet to release its revised health order, so it’s unclear whether cardrooms will face tighter protocols or have the same ones they did before Newsom enacted the regional stay-at-home order. And while some cardrooms scrambled this week to open swiftly, others are taking their time.
Then there is the question of whether customers will flock to the cardrooms weeks after the holiday surge began ebbing and with new, more contagious variants of the coronavirus popping up.
It is following the regulations set in place after the county allowed cardrooms to reopen outside in early October which includes limiting capacity to 50%, operating from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and banning food and beverages, but will make changes, if it has to, once the new health order comes out.
Other safety measures from November, which will likely exist in some form under the coming revised order, include:
- Tables spread far apart from each other
- Fewer players seated per table
- Plexiglass dividers for both players and dealers
- Increased hand sanitizing stations.
High-touch surfaces must also be cleaned, and cards replaced frequently; playing chips need to be cleaned daily. And everyone must wear masks.
