The poker industry has grown exponentially in Mexico since 2011. This is mainly because many Americans cross the border to legally practice online gambling.
However, the southern United States - from western California to eastern Florida - has a long tradition of mutual exchange and influence with its neighbouring country. So much so that many of the cities and towns have names in Spanish, as well as large Latino communities. In addition, proximity to Las Vegas has influenced the taste, pleasure and interest in betting and entertainment.
Mexico has also managed to add value to traditional poker, contributing with new ways and styles of play.
For example, Texas hold'em appears to have been invented in the Texas town of Robstown, a small border town. The Latino population there is 90%, a percentage that allows us to conjecture that their origin is Mexican. Journalists and game lovers wonder if it was really invented by Mexican immigrants to the country of freedom. They may have been the first to play before it hit Las Vegas and other cities. The reality is that this is something that is not known for sure. There is no doubt that, today, the country has a large active community of players. Mexicans lead an especially important group and stand out worldwide. The history of poker in Mexico dates to the beginning of the 20th century when it also gained popularity in the United States.
Today, playing poker is becoming one of the most important and popular entertainment in the country. Therefore, Mexico is considered, as regards poker, one of the most powerful countries in Latin America today.
The most important tournament in the world, the World Series of Poker (WSOP) international circuit, was held in Monterrey for the first time in October 2019.
