Who are the ones that play poker online?

The increase in addiction to the game through the Internet among young people has led the Spanish Federation of Rehabilitated Gambling Players (Fejar) to conduct a survey among university students to have data on the causes and profile of the players.

The results of this survey were presented this morning at an event in which the delegate of the National Drug Plan, Azucena Martín, was present.

One of the main conclusions of this survey is that telematic sports betting and poker games are the most frequent, especially among men. Up to 71% of men recognize it, compared to 29% of women. There are two reasons why they play: fun and money.

The study has been carried out by sending questionnaires to 636 young people between 18 and 35 years old from September 2018 to March 2019. A small sample in relation to the 1.5 million university students enrolled in this course, reports Efe.

Half of those who declare to play, 46%, say they arrive through advertising, 26% for their friends, 15% online and 13% answer "because I saw him on the street."

Regarding the establishment of gambling, 12.4% play in more than one type of venue and the lottery administrations (17.8%) stand out, followed by casinos and bingos (10.5%); local or bookmakers (10.3%); game rooms (8.1%); bars and cafes (4.2%).

They do not perceive the danger

In terms of online gambling, the research indicates that 81.6% of respondents report not having played, compared with 5.8% responding affirmatively. In addition, the study concludes that there is a greater tendency of men versus women to play online.

The study warns that university students, because they are people with greater intellectual preparation, believe they have a better disposition to "control" the situation and be "shielded from risks." Therefore, "they do not perceive the sensation of danger, of being able to fall into an addiction, even if they devote a large part of their time to gambling."

In view of this study, an Addiction Prevention Manual has been carried out at the university level. The technical director of Fejar, Luan Lamas has defended the need to act on prevention, "exactly the same" as with tobacco or other substances. Thus, he has argued that "it cannot be that the star gift of the first Communion of children" is a smartphone "without any control" and is committed to preventing "from the cradle."

The technical director of Fejar, Juan Lamas, has highlighted the need to prevent from an early age since a person does not play "by chance" when he reaches 18 years, because according to several studies the average age of new random players is in the 16 years.

Likewise, he warns that, unlike the "classic addict" to slot machines, the presence of the "hooked" in a place is now not required but can satisfy his addiction from the private sphere.
