A poker pro is suing an Atlantic City casino for $1.25 million after a poorly timed suicide joke resulted in a lifetime ban.
Scott Robbins is suing Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa for the seven-figure sum. Last September, the poker pro from Massachusetts reserved a room and was checking in at the front desk.
The lawsuit states that the employee checking in Robbins asked him whether he wanted a room on a floor on a lower level or one on a higher floor. Robbins then asked, “If I had to jump from a high-floor window, would I make it?” The hotel employee then pleaded with Robbins not to jump out of the window.
Robbins allegedly assured the employee that he wouldn’t jump and that he was kidding, but also asked if he would survive a leap from a room on a lower floor.
Ultimately, he was given a room on the 30th floor and then things got interesting.
An “armed security force” showed up at Robbins’ room and informed him that he would need to undergo a psychiatric evaluation if he wanted to stay onsite. An ambulance took him to a local hospital where staff said that in their opinion, Robbins was not a danger to himself or others at the casino.
Robbins incurred the medical bills himself, which forced him to come out of pocket $2,000 for the incident. It didn’t end there, however. When he returned to the casino, his personal belongings were removed from the premises, and he was informed that the casino had banned him for life.
Robbins decided to file suit against Atlantic City’s highest-grossing casino.
Robbins claims that over the next decade, he will lose $85,000 per year in poker earnings and another $200,000 in sponsorship money. He added a final $200,000 for false imprisonment, interference with prospective economic gain and libel.
He also pointed out in the documents that the Borgata’s windows are more than an inch in thickness and do not open.
Over the course of his career, Robbins has tournament cashes dating back to 2018 totaling $417,325. His most recent cash came in April when he finished 44th in a $600 no-limit hold’em event at the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida.
