Coljuegos unleashes outrage among localized gambling associations in Colombia

Coljuegos unleashed a strong disinclination and anger in the sector after publishing during the weekend on its twitter account an alleged growth in sales of Gambling sector of 84%.

Immediately, the sector unions made their disagreement and discomfort felt through a letter published on their respective social networks where they explained that the supposed growth in sales registered for the first quarter of 2021 are really marked by online gambling, not by casinos and bingo halls.

They highlight that: "It is worrying that while entrepreneurs are trying to cover the costs of their businesses, the regulator is manifesting that there is a remarkable growth of 84% in the gambling sector" and they point out that is inappropriate the presentation of a generalized increase, demonstrating "the lack of effective measures to seek the sustainability of the operation of localized games, casinos"

Although the casinos have been able to restart their operations since September last year, they have not been able to achieve a balance point between their expenses and their income, because when they were achieving it with sales of 60% due to the restrictions established by the national and local governments, Limiting the hours and service of the operation with total closings during weekends and others, sales fell again to 30%.

The most worrying thing as expressed in this letter is that before the health emergency, the segment of localized gambling, casinos and bingo halls, had the largest participation in the national gambling market. This type of game represented in 2019 60% of the collection for exploitation rights destined for transfers to health, a percentage that fell to 30%. And despite this, the issuance of measures that mitigate in the short and medium term the effects of closures applied by local governments has not been achieved.

Once again, the unions call on the regulator to present proposals that really alleviate the burdens that the operators have borne and that they cannot continue to do indefinitely with the closures of local governments, especially during the weekends. Despite having presented a proposal for the sustainability of the sector last week, it is not a solution that is in line with the reality that it lives.

The imminent regulation of gambling in Brazil, could affect enjoys sale.

The sale process of Enjoy is still in the early stages, but it already has several interested parties in its assets.

According to the Chilean press, Logrand Entertainment, the main target as a possible buyer in recent months, is interested in acquiring the operator's positions. However, the rooms in Viña del Mar, Coquimbo and Pucón would be left out of the equation.

According to Diario Financiero, the company considers the prices paid for these permits “stratospheric”, so it would be more profitable to pay the guaranteed notes. In this way, other operators such as Dreams and Marina del Sol would have the opportunity to invest there.

On the other hand, Enjoy's perhaps most relevant asset, the Punta del Este casino, is the one that generates the greatest interest in international companies. There would already be advanced negotiations with five potential buyers, despite certain negative projections in this regard.

The imminent regulation of gambling in Brazil, which could include physical casinos, would be detrimental to the Uruguayan operation, whose main clients come from that country.

However, the Plaza Esteña is relevant beyond its games room, as it is a central destination for tourism in the region. In this way, it is very likely that it will remain one of the most important assets of the Chilean company.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) published the new General Competition Regulations (RGC) of 20241. This document establishes the general norms and rules for the dispute of all championships organized by the entity. One of the most notable novelties of the new RGC is the regulation on betting house sponsorships on club uniforms. According to Article 114, the display of betting house brands on club uniforms is conditional on compliance with the requirements set forth in Law 14790/2023 and in the regulations of the Ministry of Finance.

Law 14790 on Sports Betting came into force on December 29. This rule and the regulation of the Ministry of Finance are fundamental for the implementation of the new rules on betting house sponsorships.

The new RGC also reinforces integrity actions and combats the manipulation of results. The CBF may request the production of a report by a company specialized in the detection of manipulation of results. In addition, sports betting companies must submit a declaration of non-involvement in any economic infringement or ethical violation related to the manipulation of sports results.
