SYDNEY, NSW — The Star Entertainment Group faces renewed uncertainty after the New South Wales Independent Casino Commission (NICC) announced a six-month extension of the suspension of its Sydney casino licence. The decision, revealed on March 31, 2025, underscores ongoing concerns over The Star’s regulatory compliance, despite recent leadership changes and internal reforms.

Originally suspended in October 2022 following damning revelations of money laundering, criminal associations, and governance failures, The Star was hit with a record $100 million fine. A follow-up review in October 2024 added a $15 million penalty and noted limited progress in restoring trust.
NICC chief commissioner Philip Crawford acknowledged improvements but emphasized that the operator remains “unsuitable” to hold a licence at this stage. “We see positive steps, but we need to ensure sustained, structural change,” he said.
The extension pushes any chance of reinstatement to at least October 2025, casting fresh doubt on The Star’s recovery plans and revenue forecasts.
