Sri Lanka ordered the closure of all bars and restaurants starting this Friday following a sudden increase in COVID-19 cases originating in one of its factories, the largest focus of coronavirus infections detected to date.
According to the new guidelines, bars, restaurants, spas, casinos and nightclubs will remain closed until October 31. Island authorities began tracking new cases this week after about a thousand new cases were reported in the last week, most of them related to the factory worker.
This is the highest peak of infections that the country has experienced since the beginning of the pandemic. According to the Sri Lanka Department of Information, a total of 4,488 cases have been reported to date, 13 of which have died.
The areas of the country where the new cases were detected are under an indefinite curfew. However, they will be able to open essential goods stores and pharmacies until late in the afternoon.
This new source of contagion was detected while the Government of Sri Lanka tried to promote the reactivation of the economy and after lifting, at the end of June, the curfew imposed on the entire island.
Although Sri Lanka expected to receive its first tourists in August, the reopening of airports to international flights has yet to take place.
