Costas draws the line: Legendary broadcaster refuses to promote sports betting

Published date: 2025-07-09

Legendary sportscaster Bob Costas has made headlines again—not for his iconic commentary, but for taking a firm stand against the rising wave of sports betting promotions. In a recent interview, Costas revealed that he has consistently refused to read on-air gambling promos during his work with MLB Network and Turner Sports.

According to Costas, the decision is deeply personal. He grew up watching his father struggle with gambling addiction, often placing large bets on games and endangering the family’s financial stability. That experience, he says, shaped his view of gambling’s darker side.

I just couldn’t in good conscience encourage people to do something which I know… some of them will become addicted,” Costas said. While acknowledging that sports betting is now legal and widespread across much of the U.S., he argues that its normalization could erode the essence of fandom and increase risks, especially for younger viewers.

The seasoned broadcaster believes that betting changes the relationship fans have with sports. “If you have a bet on the game, you’re not just a fan anymore—you’re financially invested in every play.” This transactional mindset, he warns, makes it easier for people to lose control and harder for them to simply enjoy the game.

Costas has called for stronger ethical standards in broadcasting and questioned the moral responsibility of networks that heavily promote gambling, especially when the long-term risks are well-documented.

His refusal to participate in betting promotions sets a rare example of restraint in an industry increasingly reliant on sportsbook revenue—and highlights an uncomfortable truth: not every dollar is worth chasing.
