Great Canadian exits Hastings as Tsleil-Waututh Nation prepares to lead

Published date: 2025-06-12

Great Canadian Entertainment has struck a deal to hand over the Hastings Racecourse & Casino operations in Vancouver to the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, marking a key step toward empowering First Nations casino ownership in British Columbia

Under a non-binding memorandum of understanding, the Tsleil-Waututh Nation—whose traditional territory spans Burrard Inlet—will acquire the casino business and related real estate assets, though the City of Vancouver’s approval is still required because the land is municipally owned Great Canadian’s lease at Hastings began in 2004 and expires next year, at which point the transaction is expected to be finalized. Great Canadian has committed to providing transition services once the sale closes

This move continues a recent trend: previously, Great Canadian sold Casino Nanaimo and Elements Casino Victoria to the Snuneymuxw First Nation in early 2024, fostering a wave of Indigenous participation in the regional gaming industry According to Tsleil-Waututh Chief Jen Thomas, the agreement is "another important step towards economic self‑determination" for the Nation.

Great Canadian CEO Matt Anfinson affirmed his support, saying, “We can think of no better entity to inherit this asset… we look forward to supporting them in the transition after the anticipated close.” The deal aligns with both parties’ goals: enabling First Nations to gain direct operational control over gaming assets while ensuring continuity for customers and staff

Finalization hinges on due diligence, regulatory approval, and municipal support. If completed, this landmark agreement will reinforce Indigenous economic growth through gaming and hospitality in British Columbia.
