The 1-800-GAMBLER helpline, the nation’s best-known support line for problem gambling, remains fully operational even as a contract dispute between the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey (CCGNJ) and the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) plays out in court.
The three-year licensing agreement that allowed NCPG to manage the helpline nationwide expired on May 31, 2025. Since then, both organizations have failed to agree on new terms. CCGNJ accuses NCPG of rejecting its renewal proposal, while NCPG insists the new terms would compromise the quality and consistency of services provided to callers.
To prevent any disruption, NCPG filed for a temporary restraining order, which a Mercer County Superior Court judge granted. The ruling ensures the hotline will continue operating at least until September 3, when further hearings or arbitration may take place.
CCGNJ’s executive director Luis Del Orbe reassured the public: “Absolutely not. The helpline is not going to be interrupted or go offline.”
Meanwhile, NCPG spokesperson Cait Huble emphasized the national stakes: “We remain committed to preserving the integrity of the helpline and ensuring consistent, high-quality care for anyone seeking help.”
The 1-800-GAMBLER line has been active since 1983, providing 24/7 confidential support and referrals. Despite the legal wrangling, both organizations agree that uninterrupted service for people struggling with gambling problems is the top priority.
