New York recognizes september as Responsible Gaming Education month

Published date: 2025-09-15

New York has officially recognized September as Responsible Gaming Education Month, joining a nationwide effort to raise awareness about responsible play at a time when the state’s gambling industry continues to expand. The initiative, aligned with the American Gaming Association’s national campaign, places consumer protection at the forefront and emphasizes that gambling in the Empire State must be safe, transparent, and accountable.

The declaration is driven by the Responsible Play Partnership, a coalition that includes the New York State Gaming Commission, the Office of Addiction Services and Supports, and the New York Council on Problem Gambling. Together they are rolling out a series of initiatives that combine public education, staff training, data reporting, and stricter advertising compliance. Officials explained that campaigns such as “Take a Break” and “Know the Odds” will receive expanded visibility across casinos, video lottery facilities, and mobile sportsbooks, while every licensed operator will be required to certify employees through Responsible Gambling Ambassador Training.

The Gaming Commission also introduced a new requirement for sportsbooks to collect anonymized demographic data on players to better tailor prevention efforts. In addition, the state’s voluntary self-exclusion program has been expanded, allowing individuals to exclude themselves from all legal gambling in New York through a single digital form. Regulators are also reviewing advertising practices to ensure compliance, including clearer visibility of problem gambling helplines and restrictions on targeting vulnerable groups.

Industry analysts stress that these measures are no longer optional public relations gestures but binding regulatory expectations. Operators who fail to comply face fines, reputational damage, and potential licensing risks. With New York leading the United States in mobile sports betting handle and generating billions in annual revenue, the move is seen as a critical step to balance market growth with social responsibility. Officials underline that a sustainable gambling market requires not only revenue but also transparency, education, and accountability, ensuring that players understand the risks and know where to find help if they need it.
