Indian casinos and online gaming platforms have been sent show-cause notices for payment of a total of $12 billion in unpaid goods and services taxes, all related to fiscal 2018, according to the outlet.
“The demand for GST (India's GST Council) on the gross value of bets, rather than gross gaming revenue, has been an industry issue and several representations have already been made to the Government at industry level in relation to this issue.”
Leading casino operator Delta Corp has also been hit with several GST demands totaling more than Rs 23.2 billion (US$2.8 billion), more than six times the company's total market capitalization, but two judges he has been granted adjournments until the matter is heard.
“In the case of online gaming, a case was decided by the Karnataka high court,” referring to the Gameskraft Technologies case.
“That matter is before the Supreme Court. They will decide on the central theme. The recovery (of the tax claim) will depend on the outcome of the court cases.”
