Macau’s Ascent: Building a Skyline Fueled by Diverse Tourism

Published date: 2025-01-28

Macau is undergoing a significant expansion in its hospitality sector, with nearly 4,300 hotel rooms planned or under construction. According to the Land and Urban Construction Bureau (DSSCU), ongoing projects are expected to be completed progressively between 2025 and 2027.

The timeline includes four hotels currently under construction, which will add 2,928 rooms, and ten additional projects in the design and approval phase, contributing another 1,301 rooms.

Macau’s Gaming Industry: Navigating Orderly Development Amidst Calls for Diversification

Projected Completion Timeline:

  • 2025: Initial wave of hotel rooms from current construction projects, focusing on large-scale developments in Cotai and urban Macau.
  • 2026: Majority of rooms from the approved projects begin to open, aligning with Macau's push to enhance its non-gaming tourism offerings.
  • 2027: Final stages of planned projects to come online, fully realizing the city's vision of a diversified and expanded hospitality industry.

Strategic Impact by 2027:

  1. Tourism Growth: The additional rooms will increase Macau’s ability to host millions more visitors annually, supporting the expected post-pandemic rebound in global tourism.
  2. Economic Benefits: The hospitality boom is projected to create thousands of jobs, from construction to long-term employment in the tourism and service sectors.
  3. Diversification Goals: With a significant portion of these hotels focusing on non-gaming amenities such as MICE facilities, wellness retreats, and family-friendly attractions, Macau aims to broaden its appeal beyond its casino-centric reputation.

Non-gaming Potential in Macau: government is actively trying to resolve this situation.

Projected Tourism and Revenue Figures:

  • Visitor Capacity: By 2027, Macau could see an increase of 15%-20% in its annual visitor numbers, surpassing pre-pandemic levels of 39 million visitors in 2019.
  • Economic Output: The expanded hotel capacity could contribute an additional $2 billion annually to Macau’s GDP, strengthening its position as a global tourism hub.

These projects, strategically timed and aligned with Macau's long-term vision, underscore the city’s resilience and ambition to remain a world-class destination well into 2027 and beyond.
