Macau’s Casino Landscape Shifts: How Grand Lisboa Palace Could Gain from Satellite Closures

Published date: 2025-03-12

The potential closure of Macau's satellite casinos could inadvertently strengthen SJM Holdings' flagship property, the Grand Lisboa Palace (GLP), according to recent analyses. As Macau's gaming industry undergoes regulatory changes, satellite casinos—operated by third parties under major concessionaires like SJM—face an uncertain future. New laws effective from 2022 prohibit these satellites from sharing gaming revenue with concessionaires, allowing only management fees, leading to questions about their financial viability.

CBRE Equity Research analysts, John DeCree and Max Marsh, suggest that the closure of these satellite casinos could benefit GLP by reallocating gaming tables and attracting former satellite patrons. They note, "Any closures could open the door for SJM to reallocate some of that table capacity—and potentially customers—to Grand Lisboa Palace."

This reallocation could bolster GLP's mass-market gaming segment, aiding its gradual market share increase, which reached 2.7% in the fourth quarter of 2024, still short of the targeted 5%.

However, challenges persist. Analysts like Vitaly Umansky from Seaport Research Partners criticize GLP's performance, citing low returns on investment and ongoing strategic adjustments.

The property's slow ramp-up since its 2021 opening underscores the need for effective marketing and service enhancements to attract premium mass-market players.

The impending decisions regarding satellite casino operations not only impact SJM's strategy but also have broader implications for Macau's gaming landscape, affecting employment and local businesses. As the 2025 deadline approaches, stakeholders are keenly observing how these developments will reshape the market dynamics and influence properties like the Grand Lisboa Palace.
