The Macau Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) has launched an investigation into complaints from workers dismissed by a major gaming operator. The complaints, raised by lawmaker Ron Lam, allege unjustified terminations at Melco Resorts & Entertainment.

DSAL confirmed that it is actively reviewing the case to ensure employee rights are upheld under Macau SAR labor laws. In response, Melco stated that all terminations complied with regulations, emphasizing its commitment to fairness and legal compliance.

The controversy intensified after reports that several employees were dismissed without prior notice or reassignment options. Lam criticized the company for allegedly failing to meet corporate social responsibility expectations. Some speculate that the Macau government may have tacitly approved layoffs, with only one major gaming operator yet to implement similar measures.

This case highlights growing concerns over employment stability in Macau’s gaming industry, which has been undergoing post-pandemic restructuring. The DSAL’s findings could set a precedent for labor policies in the sector.
