Macau concentrates HK$16 million per session as visitors surpass 10 million

Published date: 2026-03-24

the market shifts toward fewer players and higher capital

As of March 23, 2026, Macau is undergoing a structural shift in its gaming industry: more visitors, but a market increasingly concentrated around high-value players. The city has surpassed 10 million tourists in less than 80 days, with daily peaks of up to 126,000 arrivals, accelerating traffic into the world’s leading gambling hub.

However, growth is no longer driven by volume, but by capital density. The latest Citigroup table survey, led by George Choi and Timothy Chau, shows that sessions observed across the Cotai Strip and high-limit gaming areas recorded between 500 and 636 premium players, generating total wagers of HK$12 million to HK$16 million per session (≈US$1.5M–2M).

The dynamic is clear: player numbers are down by as much as -18%, while individual spending is rising by up to +27%, pushing the average wager beyond HK$28,424 (≈US$3,600).

Capital is also concentrating on extreme betting activity. Citi identified 28 “whales” generating a combined volume of HK$8.1 million, including individual bets of HK$1 million at the Horizon Room in Galaxy Macau, HK$850,000 at City of Dreams (Melco) and HK$640,000 at Wynn Palace, confirming the simultaneous presence of high-stakes players across multiple operators.

Competition among concessionaires is intensifying. Galaxy Entertainment leads with around 25% of the premium segment, followed by Melco (~21%), Wynn (~20%) and Sands China (~20%), all heavily concentrated in Cotai’s high-limit ecosystem.

Operational efficiency is also driving growth. The rollout of smart tables is accelerating gameplay: Galaxy has added 74 new tables, Sands has reached approximately 80% implementation, Wynn around 60%, and Melco close to 50%, increasing hands per hour and capital turnover.

Entertainment and tourism complete the equation. International concerts and premium Chinese tourism are driving combined spending across luxury and gaming, reinforcing baccarat’s dominance within the system.

In a market already projecting US$2.4–2.5 billion in monthly gaming revenue, Macau is no longer growing through player volume—it is growing through capital concentration.
