Right close to Chinese New Year, Macau Embraces Art and Tourism with Philip Colbert’s “Coastal Fantasia”

Published date: 2025-01-17

Sands China has joined forces with celebrated British pop artist Philip Colbert to bring a bold and immersive art experience to Macau. The vibrant exhibition, titled “Coastal Fantasia: The Lobster King’s Vacation in Macau,” is already making waves, showcasing Colbert’s iconic Lobster character across five stunning locations throughout the city. This groundbreaking event is set to run until mid-March, offering locals and tourists alike a dynamic blend of contemporary art and cultural celebration.

The exhibition features eye-popping installations, including the show-stopping “Lobster Submarine,” a towering 15-meter inflatable sculpture, and the playful “Lobster Flamingo,” standing seven meters tall at The Venetian Macao. These large-scale pieces, along with other custom creations, celebrate Macau’s coastal beauty while highlighting the city’s burgeoning role as a cultural hub.

Philip Colbert, renowned for his vibrant paintings and Lobster-themed creations, expressed his excitement at returning to Macau. “This is the largest artist takeover in the city’s history. I’m so grateful to the organizers for their ambition in bringing my works to life on such a grand scale,” Colbert shared. His vision aligns seamlessly with Sands China's efforts to blend tourism, culture, and art.

Wilfred Wong, vice chairman of Sands China Ltd, echoed the enthusiasm, stating, “By introducing internationally renowned masterpieces to Macau, we aim to boost coastal tourism and enhance the city’s cultural atmosphere.” This collaboration not only elevates Macau's profile in the global art scene but also underscores the city’s commitment to expanding its cultural tourism offerings.

Complementing “Coastal Fantasia,” Colbert’s solo show, “The Journey to the Lobster Planet Macau,” is being hosted at the Macao Cultural Center until February 15. This exhibit features over 20 new artworks, adding depth and variety to the city’s art scene.

By combining world-class art with Macau’s coastal charm, “Coastal Fantasia” is more than an exhibition—it’s a statement about the city’s aspirations to intertwine tourism with cultural enrichment.
