Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan has officially withdrawn from the highly anticipated City of Dreams Sri Lanka grand opening, scheduled for August 2, 2025, citing “unforeseen personal commitments.”
Khan, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in global cinema, was expected to headline the event at Cinnamon Life Colombo, where Melco Resorts & Entertainment is set to unveil South Asia’s first integrated casino resort. The announcement of his cancellation was confirmed by event organizers and echoed in Sri Lankan media outlets, which reported that Khan had to travel unexpectedly to New York.

Despite his absence, the event will move forward as planned, with organizers emphasizing that the launch will maintain “the same level of grandeur.” Dignitaries, entertainment acts, and executives from Melco and John Keells Holdings are still confirmed to attend.

The City of Dreams Sri Lanka is viewed as a flagship foreign investment, anchored by a 20-year gaming license and a US $125 million commitment by Melco. The property includes a Nüwa luxury hotel, international-standard casino, theater, and upscale shopping and dining facilities.

While Khan’s withdrawal is a high-profile setback, it has not dampened excitement surrounding the opening. His global fanbase expressed disappointment online, but many praised the star’s transparency.
Industry insiders note that his absence will likely be offset by increased regional media focus, potentially amplifying the property's visibility ahead of its debut.
