Vietnam is getting ready to open their borders for foreigners vaccinated

Published date: 2021-06-22

Fitch Ratings has forecast that Vietnam’s GDP could continue to grow in 2021 despite ongoing Covid-19 countermeasures. Among the Asian countries, Vietnam’s economy was one of the few which could maintain positive growth in 2020 despite the pandemic’s impact on domestic economic activity and tourism inflow.

As for the gambling sector, in March casino operators asked the government to expand Vietnamese citizens’ access to casinos in major tourism destinations. Tourists could return to Phu Quoc island if authorities approve a vaccine passport system.

The request aimed to help casinos face the loss of revenue from tourists owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, two months on the government has not yet responded to casino operators. Phu Quoc hosts several casino resorts, including The Corona Resort and Casino, the first casino in Vietnam where Vietnamese people can gamble.

Authorities are analyzing the opening up of the island by allowing Russian tourists to enter from September onwards. However, at least 90 per cent of the island citizens must first be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity.

The government is also studying the possibility of easing some quarantine measures for those who have been vaccinated and want to enter via Van Don Airport in Quang Ninh province.
