Wakayama Prefecture, having previously withdrawn its bid to host an Integrated Resort (IR) with a casino in 2022, is now reevaluating the potential economic benefits of such a venture. Governor Shuhei Kishimoto, who assumed office in December 2022, has expressed renewed interest in the IR initiative, though he notes that the national government has yet to announce a new application timeline.

In November 2024, the Japan Tourism Agency distributed questionnaires to various prefectures, including Wakayama, inquiring about their interest in future IR applications. Governor Kishimoto confirmed that Wakayama responded positively, indicating a willingness to reassess the possibility of hosting an IR should a new application window open. He emphasized that while the prefecture acknowledges the potential economic advantages of an IR, concerns remain regarding gambling addiction and public safety.

During a plenary session of the Wakayama Prefectural Assembly on March 5, 2025, Governor Kishimoto stated, "The prefecture answered that 'it is interested in having an IR'." He further mentioned that the prefecture would reexamine its position from the ground up if a new application period is announced. As of now, the central government has not provided official information regarding the next application phase, prompting Wakayama to actively seek updates on the matter.

Previously, Wakayama had closed its IR promotion office in June 2022 following the assembly's decision to withdraw from the initial application round. This decision was influenced by concerns over financial viability and public opposition. However, the current administration appears more open to revisiting the IR concept, provided that measures are implemented to address societal concerns.
As Wakayama awaits further guidance from the national government, the prefecture continues to balance the prospective economic benefits of an IR with the imperative to safeguard public welfare.
