Bolivia’s Gaming Authority Imposes Record $2.1 Million in Fines on Illegal Gambling Operations in 2024

Published date: 2025-03-10

In a robust effort to combat unauthorized gambling, Bolivia's Gaming Control Authority (AJ) imposed fines totaling Bs 2,170,136.67 (approximately $314,000) on illegal gaming operators in 2024—the highest amount recorded in nearly five years.

These sanctions underscore the AJ's commitment to safeguarding the Bolivian public from the risks associated with unregulated gambling activities, including gambling addiction and other illicit practices.

Currently, Bolivia has only one authorized casino, located in Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Throughout 2024, the AJ conducted 1,225 operational inspections and four comprehensive audits of this licensed establishment. Daily visits by AJ personnel ensured compliance with existing regulations and the proper functioning of gaming equipment, thereby promoting transparent and fair gaming practices.

The AJ's proactive measures reflect its dedication to enforcing Bolivia's Law No. 060, established in 2010, which prohibits all forms of gambling not explicitly authorized by the state. This legal framework aims to protect citizens from the potential harms of illegal gambling and to ensure that gaming activities contribute positively to the nation's economy.

In addition to imposing fines, the AJ has intensified efforts to monitor and control online gambling activities. Recognizing the surge in unauthorized online gambling platforms, the authority announced plans to enhance oversight and conduct studies to understand gambling consumption patterns in major cities, including Santa Cruz, Cochabamba, La Paz, Tarija, and Sucre.

These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to modernize Bolivia's gambling industry, ensuring that it operates within the bounds of the law while providing safe and regulated entertainment options for the public.
