BUENOS AIRES — A Buenos Aires legislator has raised alarm over the spread of illegal gambling advertisements in the city’s subway system, calling on regulators to step in and remove the unauthorized content.

Lawmakers said the ads promote unlicensed online betting platforms that operate outside Argentina’s legal framework. Facundo Del Gaiso, a member of the Buenos Aires legislature, filed a complaint this week urging transport authorities and gambling regulators to investigate how the ads were placed and who is responsible for their distribution.

“These promotions are not just illegal; they are predatory,” Del Gaiso argued, noting that the subway system carries millions of daily passengers, including minors. “We cannot normalize exposure to unauthorized gambling while ignoring the risks it creates for vulnerable communities.”

Argentina’s regulated market allows licensed operators under the supervision of the Lottery of the City of Buenos Aires (LOTBA), but offshore and unregulated sites continue to target local players. Analysts warn that public advertising of such sites undermines the credibility of the regulated system and siphons tax revenue away from public programs. The complaint is now under review, and officials are expected to decide whether penalties or enforcement actions will follow.
