One of the strongest struggles of Coljuegos during the last period of time has been to find criminal networks that through the sale of chance, lottery and illegal raffles have profited during the most complex period for gambling industry because of the COVID-19. For this reason, the entity has promoted the adoption of a strategy to combat the illegal chance by creating seeds through prevention, assistance, prosecution and criminal prosecution. Promoting and coordinating inter-institutional work, which has allowed the development of effective actions aimed at increasing the capacity to detect, prosecute and dismantle illegal networks.
During the first weeks of 2021, the national police have intensified their operations to confront the illegality in gambling, in fact, last week they managed to remove from circulation more than 13 thousand illegal raffle tickets and 1,050 manual chances in Sucre (pictured).
In this area of the country, illegal gambling generates losses of more than one billion pesos per month for the company Supergiros, which is the only one authorized in Sucre to handle games of luck and chance. However, these losses also affect the health sector, because due to this illegality, the department stops receiving 100 million pesos per month, which a year represents $ 1,200 million.
The work of the Police in Sucre, allowed to discover that the illegality of raffles and chance abound especially in Sincelejo, San Marcos, San Onofre, Corozal, San Benito, Palmito, Majagual and Sucre-Sucre.
In fact, a collaboration has been sought between the municipal administrations, Coljuegos and the national police due to the substantial increase during the end of the year in illegal raffles.
Raffles have been reported where the jackpot is a totally new motorcycle for the purchase of tickets of 3,000 Colombian pesos, four figures. By doing numbers with that raffle, if more than 10,000 ballots are issued, a tax of 14% to the respective mayor of the 30 million Colombian pesos sold in this raffle is lost.
And although it may not seem like much, this has turned into an embezzlement of multiple equal raffles that is affecting the health finances of the different departments, as it is a situation that everyday dozens of new illegal raffles appear increasing the emptiness in the coffers governments to support the current situation in the face of the emergency caused by COVID-19.
