influencer u-turn: from promoting bets to fighting illegal gambling in argentina

Published date: 2025-07-09

Argentine influencers, including wanda nara and l-gante, have reversed course after facing legal action for promoting illegal gambling platforms. Now, they are the faces of a new campaign warning the public about the risks of unlicensed betting.

The shift comes after the public prosecutor's office in buenos aires launched investigations into more than 100 digital celebrities. Instead of continuing with criminal charges, prosecutors offered a restorative justice deal. The influencers were required to post a video message on their social media platforms warning about the dangers of illegal gambling, keep it visible for 30 days, and complete a course on gambling addiction.

The campaign highlights how the damage done through social media can be countered through the same channels. The prosecutors insisted the influencers “repair the harm” using the same audience and platforms they originally used for promotion.

This move is part of a wider initiative to curb the spread of illegal betting in argentina. Authorities have already blocked over 400 unlicensed gambling sites. Regulators expressed concern about how young users—especially minors—are exposed to illegal gambling content online, often through influencers they admire.

This is not the first legal action involving social media figures. Previously, several influencers in argentina were criminally denounced for their role in marketing illegal betting apps. The message is clear: even digital fame does not exempt individuals from responsibility.

The latest video campaign may serve as both an apology and a warning. As regulators tighten oversight, influencers are now seen not just as marketers but as potential liabilities when promoting unauthorized gambling operators.
