Mexico is not planning a new casino law, it is not true

Published date: 2024-12-10

Despite the statements of Congressman Ricardo Monreal, president of the Political Coordination Board of the Chamber of Deputies, the President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum flatly denied that she plans to send a new Law on Games and Lotteries to Congress.

Last week, deputies of the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo) met with the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, who informed them that the Office of the President is preparing a new reform of the current legislation that seeks to eradicate corruption in Mexico's casinos and to stop extortion.

Sheinbaum acknowledged that the law that currently regulates casinos is outdated and not in keeping with current times, but that the government does not plan to renew or modify it in any case. The Federal Law on Games and Lotteries was enacted on December 31, 1947, by then-President Miguel Alemán Valdés (1946-1952).
