Denmark rises to lead europe’s gambling regulators with anders dorph at helm of gref

Published date: 2025-07-01

Denmark’s Gambling Authority, Spillemyndigheden, has taken center stage in European gaming regulation as its Director, Anders Dorph, was recently appointed Chair of the Gambling Regulators’ European Forum (GREF). This move signals a major shift toward leveraging Denmark’s well-regarded regulatory framework as a model for other jurisdictions.

In a recent interview, Dorph emphasized that his main mandate as GREF Chair is to “strengthen collaboration and dialogue among European gambling regulators.” He highlighted that GREF’s work will focus on areas such as consumer protection, oversight of youth engagement, and fostering innovation—all values that align with the Danish regulatory ethos.

Spillemyndigheden has earned a reputation for combining firm licensing and enforcement with forward-thinking policies such as self-exclusion registries and age verification systems. Under Dorph’s leadership, Denmark ranks among Europe’s strongest legal gaming markets, with over 91% of gambling activity tracked through official channels. This level of transparency not only safeguards consumers but also creates an attractive environment for operators and investors.

Dorph brings to GREF a high-energy style: he recently chaired the “Digital and Innovation” panel in Athens, where European regulators met to tackle challenges like money laundering, illegal gaming, and digital transition strategies. Now as Chair, he aims to expand multilateral knowledge-sharing initiatives and elevate responsible gaming standards across all 36 member nations.

Speaking about the coming term, Dorph reasserted that GREF will stay “visible, open, and operational,” working closely with national authorities to build shared tools such as data platforms, research frameworks, and policy guidelines. With youth gambling and digital marketing drawing particular scrutiny, he stressed GREF’s role in empowering regulators to craft consistent and effective protections.

This leadership appointment underscores Denmark’s rising influence in global gambling oversight. For stakeholders in the industry—from operators to technology providers—the Dorph era at GREF promises a stronger voice for Nordic regulatory best practices and a more unified European front in addressing emerging risks.
