EGBA sets the standard: online gambling giants reaffirm anti-money laundering commitment

Published date: 2025-07-09

Members of the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) have successfully completed the second annual review of their pan-European Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Guidelines, reinforcing the industry's commitment to strong compliance and risk controls in the online gambling sector.

The initiative, first launched in 2023, includes voluntary but robust self-assessment of key AML practices such as customer due diligence, suspicious transaction reporting, and risk-based evaluation procedures. This year’s review also introduced stricter benchmarks based on practical implementation and operational challenges.

EGBA members—who hold over 320 online gambling licences across 21 EU countries—collectively represent around 30% of Europe’s regulated online gambling market. Their compliance with the AML code was assessed through an internal audit process facilitated by a third-party consultant, with results feeding into a future update of the guidelines.

Europe’s online gambling sector thrives: EGBA 2025 report celebrates record growth and safer play”

This annual review process demonstrates our members’ willingness to go beyond basic legal requirements and build a consistent culture of compliance,” said EGBA Secretary General Maarten Haijer.

The association confirmed that updated AML guidelines aligned with the upcoming EU AML Authority (AMLA) framework are expected to be published in 2026. The effort comes amid increased regulatory scrutiny on the online gaming sector, particularly around cross-border payments, outsourced services, and integrity in betting markets. The EGBA sees the guidelines as a proactive tool to both prevent criminal abuse and raise industry standards across member and non-member operators.
