Gibraltar steps forward with bold regulatory stance under Andrew Lyman

Published date: 2025-05-28

Gibraltar’s Gambling Commissioner Andrew Lyman has reiterated the jurisdiction’s commitment to regulatory transparency and long-term stability in the online gaming sector, emphasizing its readiness to meet international expectations despite mounting scrutiny.

Speaking in a series of recent interviews, , Lyman presented a confident outlook. “We are not in a doom-and-gloom scenario post-Brexit,” he said, noting Gibraltar’s strategic measures to protect cross-border workforce mobility and retain market access. His remarks reflect ongoing efforts to position Gibraltar as a resilient hub for international operators navigating evolving compliance standards.

Addressing the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) "grey list" designation, Lyman acknowledged the challenges but pointed to Gibraltar’s progress on anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing frameworks. “Significant reforms have already been implemented,” he affirmed.

Lyman also highlighted the importance of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) practices, calling on gambling companies to embed sustainability and accountability into their operations. He supports the potential creation of a gambling ombudsman in the UK to enhance player protections and dispute resolution—a move he believes could serve as a model across jurisdictions. With major operators like Entain and 888 continuing operations from Gibraltar, Lyman emphasized that the territory’s value proposition lies in its high compliance standards and direct regulator access.

As international pressure reshapes global gaming oversight, Gibraltar’s proactive regulatory stance may prove to be its strongest bet yet.
