Portugal’s regulatory body the Serviço Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos do Turismo de Portugal (SRIJ) published the results of licensed online gambling for the first half of 2020. Online gambling earned €139m, a 44% rise compared to €96m for the same period in 2019.
It is important to mention, that this is despite the suspension of major sporting events in March, the SRIJ stated sports betting turnover was €90.7m in Q2, a drop from €149m in Q1; betting revenue for Q2 was €20.7m. But online casino turnover was €1.3bn, it means a successful 39% increase compared to Q1, and revenue for Q2 was €48.4m, compared to €35.3m for the first quarter of 2020. Online casino turnover for H1 was €2.3bn, with April raking in €479.3m and June dropping to €372m.
But in terms of players, the numbers have been instable as the highest number of players recorded was in March with 60,000 and the greatest dip in the player count was in May with 33,500.
The SRIJ also stated that definitely the country’s online gaming market proved to be capable, and able to “resist and adapt” during a time of enormous change as June saw the market return to pre-pandemic levels of activity.
