SkyCity Entertainment Group has scored a major win down south, with the New Zealand Gambling Commission officially renewing its Queenstown casino licence for another 15 years, effective 7 December 2025. The move locks in SkyCity’s presence in one of the country’s top tourist hubs until around 2040, giving the company much-needed certainty as it looks to the future.
The renewal covers the SkyCity Queenstown Casino located on Beach Street, which has been part of the local entertainment scene since 2000. The company said it was “stoked” with the decision, calling it a vote of confidence in SkyCity’s compliance standards and its commitment to responsible gaming.

Queenstown’s casino is one of just six licensed venues nationwide and plays a key role in the resort town’s visitor economy, drawing thousands of domestic and international guests each year. Industry analysts reckon the extension will help SkyCity plan future refurbishments and strengthen its footprint in the southern market at a time when tourism numbers are climbing again post-pandemic.
The company’s shares rose on the NZX following the announcement, as investors welcomed the reduced regulatory uncertainty and long-term revenue stability. Local businesses also expect positive spin-offs in hospitality and tourism spend once the group rolls out planned upgrades to the venue.
