Spain’s traditional football pool “La Quiniela” hits historic low as fantasy and betting surge

Published date: 2025-08-29

The iconic Spanish football pool, La Quiniela, once a cultural staple for generations of fans, has fallen to historic lows in sales as new forms of sports engagement reshape the market. Recent figures show the state-run pool has been overtaken by fantasy football platforms and online sportsbooks, both of which are capturing the attention of younger demographics.

Introduced in 1946, La Quiniela allowed players to predict the outcome of Spanish league matches with a modest stake, becoming a Saturday ritual for millions. For decades it funded sports development and was viewed as a safe, low-cost form of gaming. However, the rise of digital-native alternatives has left the pool struggling to maintain relevance.

According to industry analysts, sales of La Quiniela have plummeted to their lowest point in nearly 80 years, a stark contrast to the booming online betting sector in Spain, which reported revenues of more than €1.23 billion in 2024. Fantasy football, particularly platforms linked to LaLiga and global providers, has also captured market share by blending competition, community, and real-time engagement.

Experts highlight two key reasons for La Quiniela’s decline: lack of innovation and failure to adapt to modern consumer habits. While sports betting operators offer live odds, mobile apps, and bonus incentives, La Quiniela remains tied to a rigid format with limited flexibility.

Still, some voices believe the product could evolve. Suggestions include digital integration with LaLiga apps, dynamic odds, and cross-promotions with online casinos or sportsbooks. Without reform, however, the iconic football pool risks becoming a relic of Spain’s gaming past.
