Last June, 73% of voters approved the revision of the country's gambling law, despite claims by opponents who argue that restricting gamblers' access is a censure by the government. The law took effect in January, but the blocking of foreign gaming websites will begin next month.
At the beginning of this month the country granted the first four licenses of online operation to land-based casinos.
Swiss players will be able to bet online only with casinos and national lotteries that pay taxes in the country and take measures to protect people from gambling addiction.
A list of unauthorized gambling providers will be published on the websites of the Federal Gambling Commission and the Lotteries and Betting Commission. Those who are blacklisted will be automatically blocked by the Swiss telecommunications service providers by means of DNS blocks (domain name server). Only websites accessible from Switzerland will be blocked. Foreign service providers who voluntarily withdraw from the Swiss market with the appropriate measures will not be blocked.
Swiss players registered in foreign casinos will have to contact them directly, in order to obtain the money that may correspond to them, since the Swiss regulators do not have jurisdiction over them.
It is estimated that more than 250 million francs (US $ 252 million) per year reach the coffers of foreign online casinos, located mainly in Malta or Gibraltar.
