The latest data from the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) reveals a significant shift in the country’s gambling demographics, particularly among younger male audiences. According to the Gambling Survey for Great Britain (GSGB), overall gambling participation in the last four weeks stands at 46%, but drops to 28% when National Lottery-only players are excluded.
The report highlights a growing reliance on online gambling platforms, especially among males aged 18–24, who now account for the highest non-lottery gambling participation rate at 47%. This demographic is most active in high-risk categories such as in-play sports betting and online instant win games.

When filtered to exclude lottery participation, online gambling engagement drops to 17%, but still represents a core driver of digital betting activity. Popular activities include scratchcards (12%), sports betting (10%), and online instant wins (7%).

The data suggests a transformation in gambling habits: from traditional retail and lottery-based participation toward faster-paced, digital-first formats that appeal to younger users. UKGC officials emphasized that these trends will inform targeted regulatory updates, particularly around youth protection, advertising exposure, and safer gambling tools.
As online gambling continues to outpace traditional formats, UK regulators face growing pressure to adapt oversight mechanisms and ensure that the industry evolves responsibly in the digital era.
