As the online gambling industry, especially online poker has been gaining relevance in Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries, it is observed that the number of active accounts grows in a way comparable to the number of active players. While in 2013 the total number of players was around 640,000 and the total accounts close to one million, in 2017 the players had grown to 1,300,000 (doubling the figure of 2013) and the active accounts were 2,300,000 (more than double totals in 2013).
In 2018 there is an extremely high increase in the number of active accounts, above 3 million, but active players did not grow as much, they did not reach one and a half million. In 2019, all this growing player and account evolution declined, with a steeper curve for active accounts.
This figure is offset by that of advertising spending, which has seen its spending increase from 68 million euros for 2014 to 181 million in 2019. Only in 2017 was negative growth registered, going from 113 million euros in 2016 at 103 the following.
Since then, advertising spending has increased by almost 100%, although it will remain to be seen what the data for the year 2020 will be like, after the regulations approved by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs and the situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
