The two biggest casino companies in Australia have agree to help with the COVID-19 situation by shutting off half their poker machines. With this they are seeking to force gamblers in social distancing that consequently will slow the spread of the coronavirus.
The measures show the pressure on the tourism sub-sector to keep operating amid a widespread shutdown of entertainment and sporting events as authorities limit public gatherings to curtail the spread of the illness.
The two companies are licensed to operate a total of more than 4,000 machines mostly in Sydney and Melbourne. According to the companies, the measure has been approved by the chief health officer of Victoria state, and in line with Federal Government policy.
