Poker machines have been in the middle of a political fight in Australia, this fight has been directly leaded by two political Australian parties, the Greens and Liberals.
Governance expert Kate Crowley affirmed: “While the pokies policy might not be top of the list in terms of policy concerns by Tasmanians, when it comes to negotiating government, it could be a bargaining chip that could be really important as the Greens have shown”.
The plan of liberals is to allow individual venues to apply for a license to operate their own poker machines, a model backed by Federal Group and the gaming lobby. But Greens leader Cassy O'Connor has committed to moving a motion of no confidence against the Liberals if the party does not back away from its gaming policy. This election campaign has been dominated by the issue of poker machines, and according to O´Connor the big fishes from gambling industry are helping to empower liberal party in this election that in the future will be exchange by policies and. Reason why O´Connor is asking to the liberal party to come up with the true about donations, how much and from who.
Liberals adopted a similar position to the Greens and pledged to remove pokies from pubs and clubs by 2023.
