Star entertainment slashes 40 roles in final purge for bally’s takeover and regulatory sign-off.

Published date: 2025-11-24

The Star Entertainment Group, one of Australia’s largest casino operators, is executing a drastic organizational overhaul, eliminating approximately 40 senior management and executive positions. This major staff reduction is a crucial pre-emptive step ahead of the proposed $1.2 billion (AUD) takeover by U.S. gaming giant, Bally’s Corporation.

The dismissals are part of an aggressive "business simplification" strategy, targeting corporate overhead and reducing bureaucratic layers. Star’s objective is to create a much leaner, more efficient operating structure, essential for restoring financial stability and, critically, achieving regulatory fitness.

This restructuring is directly linked to Star’s recent, well-documented history of regulatory failures. The company has faced major government inquiries in New South Wales and Queensland over compliance failures and poor corporate governance, leading to significant fines and instability. The cost-saving measures and structural changes are necessary to stabilize the balance sheet and demonstrate to Australian regulators that the company can successfully rebuild under new ownership.

The Star’s Sydney licence remains in limbo as NSW regulator extends suspension by six months

For Bally’s, the acquisition of a restructured and financially tightened Star significantly minimizes integration risks. The move signals a clear commitment from the outgoing management to address the foundational flaws of the previous organizational model. The cuts, which largely impact non-operational roles, are designed to ensure the casino licenses can be smoothly transferred to Bally’s Corporation upon the successful completion of the takeover. This regulatory compliance effort is paramount to the entire deal moving forward.
