The gaming industry in Reno, Nevada, has become part of the emergency response to the Hawk Fire, a fast-moving wildfire that began on August 22, 2026 near Hawk Meadow Trail, in Somersett, northwest of the city, and expanded toward Peavine Peak and the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.
By August 23–24, the blaze had burned more than 15,000 acres, remained at 0% containment during the most critical phase and forced roughly 42,000 people under mandatory evacuation orders, while another 45,000 were placed under evacuation warnings. At least six people were injured (three civilians and three first responders), around 10,000 homes and businesses lost power, several structures were damaged or destroyed, and sections of U.S. Route 395 were closed.
Authorities say the fire was human-caused, although they had not determined publicly whether it was accidental or intentional. Strong winds, low humidity and dry vegetation accelerated its spread.
As shelters filled, six casino-resorts converted part of their hotel inventory into emergency lodging. Nugget Casino Resort offered rooms from US$49 per night, while Grand Sierra Resort, J Resort, Silver Legacy Resort Casino, Eldorado Resort Casino and Circus Circus Reno lowered rates to around US$59, eliminating resort fees for evacuees and first responders. The corporate response spans some of Nevada’s largest gaming groups. Grand Sierra Resort, owned by Alex Meruelo’s Meruelo Group, is led by President Shannon Keel and General Manager Cheraz Ecker. The property is simultaneously advancing a roughly US$1 billion expansion plan, including a 10,000-seat arena.

Nugget Casino Resort, in Sparks, is operated by Century Casinos, led by Erwin Haitzmann and Peter Hoetzinger; Century acquired the property’s operations in 2023 for about US$100 million. J Resort belongs to Jacobs Entertainment, controlled by Jeffrey Jacobs. Silver Legacy, Eldorado and Circus Circus form The Row, operated by Caesars Entertainment, headed by CEO Thomas Reeg.
Governor Joe Lombardo declared an emergency in Washoe County and activated the Nevada National Guard. The response also involves Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue, Reno Fire Department, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Forest Service, CAL FIRE, the American Red Cross and regional emergency agencies.
No casino has disclosed the total cost of the aid, but the support is direct; lower room rates, waived fees and immediate accommodation while thousands of residents are being pushed out of their homes by the fire.
