…or just another failed try to achieve equilibrium . Veikkaus Oy is the Finnish national betting agency fully owned by the same government (managed by the ministry of education) with a monopoly under subjects such as legal betting: lotteries and sports betting.
The company that organizes approximately 20 different games receives their 1/3 profits from lottery (in 2010 the total sales were 462,7 million euros). Veikkaus announced las week a new system for the future, which will force their users to identify themselves before they can play on slot machines.
This authentication barrier comes after a recent report of THL (National Institute for health and welfare) where is affirmed that roughly 130,000 people in the Scandinavian country manage gambling addiction.
The investment valued in 50-100 million euros, will affect more than eighteen thousand slots highlighting that they can be found in supermarkets, kiosks and at petrol stations. Even though, the head of corporate social responsibility at Veikkaus, Pekka Ilmivalta, affirms that it´s impossible to know with certainty how quickly will be the machines upgraded, the new norm is excepted to take effect in 2023. In another side of the pictures, the government of Finland have various issues to attack first in order to achieve a successful strategy, first of all the company has not yet decided on a specific authentication method for the machines, mainly because it expects payment technologies to develop significantly in five years. And linked to this issue must be taken in their bullet points that users may use entirely different methods than they do today to verify their identities, but as said by the company´s responsible gambling manager Hannu rinkinen, they will try to find the easiest way for users of its slot machines to do so.
The other issue is how the authentication process could be applied for the foreign people to let them use the slots.
