The Nederland Planning and Zoning Commission on Tuesday voted not to recommend a permit for a proposed private poker club, putting long odds on whether the City Council will approve the project later this month.
Residents who live within 200 feet of the proposed club spoke out against it during a joint public hearing a day earlier with the council and the planning commission.
Planning Commission chairman Scott Watjus cited the overwhelming crowd sentiment, though he didn’t address whether the decision was driven by specific complaints about the potential for noise or increased traffic.
“I’ve been with this commission for 10 or 15 years, and I’ve never seen such opposition, it’s obvious the citizens don’t want it, and it especially makes it hard to give a recommendation when we don’t have the codes for something like this.” Watjus said.
By law, the club would earn money only from memberships and concessions. The building proposed in Nederland would share 26 parking spots with other nearby properties on the street.
State law prohibits gambling, but private poker clubs are allowed as long as establishments profit from membership fees instead of a share of wagers.
