For years, the debate seemed straightforward: would the growth of online gambling eventually take market share away from land-based casinos?
Perhaps we were asking the wrong question.

Online gambling is growing at a pace that is increasingly difficult to ignore. The global market is estimated at around USD 97.7 billion in 2026 and could exceed USD 202.8 billion by 2033, representing a compound annual growth rate of close to 11%. Latin America is following a similar path, with the market projected to grow from approximately USD 7.24 billion in 2025 to more than USD 16.2 billion by 2033.
But the most interesting story is not simply how fast online gambling is growing.
It is what that growth is beginning to change inside the physical casino.
For many years, the usual path was to take a successful land-based slot game and adapt it for a digital environment. Today, that flow increasingly works in both directions: concepts, mechanics, bonus features, characters and interaction models that prove successful online are beginning to influence the development of land-based machines.
We used to digitize the slot machine.

Now we are also starting to turn digital gaming experiences into physical slot machines.
And that is changing the way machines are designed.
Players who use smartphones every day arrive at casinos already accustomed to intuitive interfaces, immediate feedback, dynamic graphics, simple navigation and audiovisual experiences that communicate their appeal within seconds.
As a result, software, screens, animation and interaction are becoming increasingly important in the design of new machines. The cabinet still matters, but it can no longer be considered separately from the content and experience it delivers.
There is another important transformation as well: online gaming can become a huge product-testing laboratory. It provides opportunities to observe player behavior, test mechanics and understand which experiences generate stronger engagement before some of those ideas are eventually transferred to the casino floor.
For those of us who develop slot machines, this convergence changes the way we think about the product.
At MundoVideo®, we are watching this evolution closely because designing the next generation of machines requires understanding not only the player who walks into a casino, but also the player whose daily entertainment experience is increasingly shaped by a smartphone.
The land-based casino is not disappearing.
It is evolving under the influence of the digital world.
And perhaps, a few years from now, we will no longer talk about online and land-based as two separate industries.
They will simply be two environments for the same gaming experience.
