Dallas casino dream fades as Las Vegas Sands halts Texas expansion efforts

Published date: 2025-03-24

Las Vegas Sands Corp. has officially ended its campaign to bring a casino resort to Dallas, withdrawing from a multi-year effort to legalize destination gaming in Texas. The company dissolved its political action committee, the Texas Destination Resort Alliance, and terminated contracts with its local lobbying teams.

The decision marks a significant shift after Sands had spent millions advocating for legislation that would allow resort-style casinos in major Texas metro areas, including Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio. The proposed bill aimed to boost tourism and generate new tax revenue by legalizing casinos tied to large-scale resorts.

Despite strong marketing efforts and outreach, Sands encountered continued resistance from conservative lawmakers and religious groups, who remain opposed to gambling expansion in the state. The bill failed to gain traction during recent legislative sessions.

Sands representatives stated that while the current campaign is over, the company remains open to future opportunities in Texas should the political climate shift. The move leaves Texas as one of the largest states without legal casinos, despite growing public interest in expanding gambling options.

The withdrawal represents a major setback for casino advocates who hoped Texas would become the next big gaming frontier.
