With the Copa América, sports betting operators would earn 30% more than they earn today

Published date: 2019-06-19
With the Copa América

Regarding the Copa America, sportsbooks in the country receive mostly their income from soccer, these percentages range from 75% to 80% of total income according to the betting house. However, last year this number came up until 94%.

With this new event, all actors who have direct contact with sports betting are seeing significant growth in several aspects. The first thing to note is that during the first 3 years of operation that sports betting has had in the country, there has been a total record of just over 2.5 million players, barrier which is hoped to be broken by the Copa América according to Juan B. Pérez president of Coljuegos:

"We hope that with the momentum of the Copa América we will be able to overcome the three million players registered in online operators by the end of the year," said Juan B.

And, if we go back to the World Cup in Russia in 2018, the figures reported by Coljuegos saw a growth of 45% in registered players where it went from 897,000 to 1.3 million players at the end of July of that year. Of the 2.5 million players registered by Coljuegos, WPlay and Betplay take 64% of the cake each of them has 800,000 users, then Codere Apuestas takes 20% to cover 180,000 players, and finally the remaining 900,000 are shared among the other 15 operators.

This growth is expected to be reflected from the largest cities to towns such as Segovia where they expect to have 100,000 new sports betting users for next year. However, these events are not the only reason why the growth in the number of players is reflected, because although the national regulation contemplates that the minimum return for the player must be 83%, the operators surpass this figure, reaching 89%.

In terms of revenue for operators, the positive omen continues because once again citing the World Cup in Russia in 2018 there was a 60% growth, where it went from $ 17,000 million to $ 27,000 million Colombian pesos. With this said, some sportsbooks or operators seek a growth of at least 30% but Coljuegos says it will be close to 10%.

While the president of WPlay, Julio César Tamayo, expects the behavior to be alike what was experienced during the last World Cup. But he added that "the scope of this type of competition is not so much for the growth in the bets but more for the exhibition, marketing and education of the users".

Finally, the operators also understand that this sector is very passionate and knowledgeable person as Javier Amaya, commercial vice president of Grupo Reditos, one of the companies that owns Betplay, said that "If Colombia advances to the quarterfinals, the growth can exceed 25%, because here you play with the emotion of the fans "
