Gibraltar’s entry into Schengen: A game-changer for the gaming industry

Published date: 2025-06-16

Gibraltar has officially entered the Schengen Area in June 2025, marking a major milestone in post‑Brexit integration. The recent agreement between the UK, Spain, and the EU has removed land border checks, ushering in a “passport‑free” travel framework for approximately 15,000 daily commuters—many of whom work in Gibraltar’s gaming and casino sector

For gambling operators and slot machine manufacturers, this change brings unparalleled benefits. Staff who live in Spain can now commute into Gibraltar without delays or hassle—eliminating barriers that once hampered recruitment and scheduling. During a briefing with operators, Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo welcomed the move, stating: “They can come in and out… without so much as having to flash any document” This fluidity ensures smoother shift rotations, faster hiring, and improved staff stability.

This agreement mimics the Eurostar-style “juxtaposed controls” system, with passport checks only at air and sea entry points, while overland traffic flows freely . Crucially, gaming employees and tourists now benefit from more efficient entry procedures—reducing time lost in queues, boosting visit frequency, and enhancing the overall casino experience.

Gibraltar removed from EU high-risk AML/CFT list—A mark of regulatory progress

Moreover, Gibraltar’s integration into Schengen paves the way for direct EU flights to the Rock—expanding tourist inflow and opening up promotional opportunities for gaming events and conferences. EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič called the accord a “truly historic milestone” for the region’s economic integration and border unity

However, travelers must still respect Schengen rules: UK visitors from Gibraltar who exceed 90 days in the zone over 180 days could be denied entry . But for the local gaming industry, this new regulatory landscape offers a secure foundation to scale operations, attract talent, and enhance visitor experiences across Gibraltar’s casinos.
