Argentine church pressures senate to regulate online gambling despite Milei’s opposition

Published date: 2025-02-19

Argentina’s Catholic Church is urging the Senate to advance a bill regulating online gambling and preventing gambling addiction, despite President Javier Milei’s firm opposition. The Episcopal Commission for Social Pastoral, led by Bishop Dante Braida, sent a letter to Vice President Victoria Villarruel and Senate leaders demanding urgent debate on the bill, which was approved by the House of Deputies in November 2024.

The proposed legislation includes banning gambling advertisements, biometric ID verification to prevent minors from accessing betting sites, and stricter financial controls on deposits and withdrawals. Church leaders warn that unregulated online gambling is fueling addiction, particularly among young people, and creating a “society of compulsive gamblers.”

Argentina Steps Up Fight Against Online Gambling and Gambling Addiction

Despite growing pressure, President Milei has vowed to veto the bill if it passes the Senate, arguing that state intervention restricts personal freedom. Meanwhile, the online gambling market continues to expand, with provincial regulations varying widely.

As the Senate prepares to address the bill in early March, the Church’s push for stricter regulations is expected to spark a heated debate, with gambling operators, lawmakers, and religious leaders clashing over the future of Argentina’s iGaming industry.
